Distillery Information
Ardbeg distillery was officially founded in 1815 by Duncan Macdougall, although it’s thought that the distillery was making spirit before then. Most distilleries back then made their spirit for blending, Ardbeg was no exception and by 1886 they were producing around 1.35 million litres per year, much the same as it currently does today. Production stopped in 1981 but in 1989 production resumed with limited production, which continued under the ownership of Hiram Walker 'till late 1996. In 1997 the distillery was bought by Glenmorangie (now LMVH) and production started again in 1997, going to maximum production in 1998. This distillery now has a huge following amongst peat loving drinkers and collectors alike, with their annual release bottles being made available exclusively to committee members, older bottlings from this distillery are now highly sought after.
