Distillery Information

Dalmore Distillery was established by entrepreneur Alexander Matheson in 1839 and was later sold to Charles and Andrew Mackenzie in 1867. The Mackenzies would own the distillery for almost a hundred years. In 1917 the firth was used by the Royal Navy for the production of deep-sea mines; an explosion resulting from a detonated mine led to a large part of the distillery being destroyed in 1920. After a lengthy legal battle, the distillery began production again. In the 1960’s the Mackenzie Brothers Ltd merged with long-time customers - the giants Whyte & Mackay. In 1966 the number of stills on site doubled, making it one of the largest producers of whisky in Scotland. There have been many corporate mergers and buyouts since but quality has always been at the heart of this northern distillery. Situated at Alness, this distillery attracts flocks of tourists and visitors each year, a real favourite with drinkers and collectors alike.
